The Ultimate Parents “New To Hockey” Checklist

At Dorion’s Sport Excellence, we really pride ourselves on providing incredible equipment, professional and helpful advice and ensuring your young one is ready to go when it’s Ice time.

There’s lots of blogs, info and resources available, but we wanted to give a personal guide based on a brand new busy parents point of view.

Recently we spoke with Jacques who is a new hockey parent. He gave us some tips for all of you wondering how to stay sane in the cold rinks this year.

So, get them some gear, get registered and get to the rink.

Here is our mini version of the Doiron’s Hockey checklist for parents and kids.

1) Be prepared for early, cold rink time. Always show up 15 minutes early.
2) Make sure they are pre-dressed and warm! (There are enough bodies in the locker rooms as it is)
3) Ensure you and your child both fully understand time and tardiness and how to make life easier on everyone involved. (Possibly use a calendar to layout mornings & weekends)
4) When purchasing gear ask questions, call us! If you get your child a right handed stick and he shoots left, you both will feel pretty silly.
4) Skates must be sharp when learning to skate.
5) Be prepared to travel.
6) Let coaches do the coaching
7) Be present and encouraging. Ask questions about what aspects they may enjoy or want to pursue. This will give you a better idea of how they ultimately feel about the sport.

Here is a basic list of what you will need to get:
  • Hockey Bag
  • Jock (or jill for girls)
  • Shin pads
  • Hockey socks
  • Hockey Pants
  • Skates
  • Shoulder Pads
  • Elbow Pads
  • Neck Guard
  • Hockey Gloves
  • Helmet with full cage
  • Mouth Guard
  • Jersey for practice
  • Hockey stick
  • Skate guards
  • Water Bottle
  • Stick tape
  • Shin pad tape
  • Pucks
  • Stick handling Ball

If your looking for more information about gear or helmet fitting, we are here to help. We absolutely recommend coming in and getting fitted. Everyones head shape is different and we urge you not to buy online or via catalog, these can be expensive mistakes. Check out a helmet fitting video below for more details.

Look forward to seeing you at the shop this Hockey Season.
